Bruce Bobick, Lanternes des Morts on display through the month of November 10:30- 7 pm M-Thurs 10:30- 5 pm F
A 12th century stone conical-shaped chimney with holes in its sides rather than its top located in Bayeux, France inspired a series of watercolor paintings entitled, "Lanternes des Morts", or "Lanterns of Death", by Bruce Bobick, professor emeritus of the University of West Georgia.
Artist Statement: Lanternes des Mort
Since 1999, I have been going to Bayeux, France. While there, I
noticed an odd architectural structure that appeared to be an inverted
cone-shaped chimney with holes in its sides rather than one large
opening at the top. It is called a Lanterne des Mort, or lantern of death.
I have discovered many different theories as to the function of these
medieval structures, but as yet there is not one definitive answer to
which a majority of historians can agree upon. Even so, I chose to base
a series of watercolor paintings upon the theory which seemed the most
interesting to me.
If someone in a village or town was extremely ill and in danger of
dying, since the villages were small, everyone would have known of the
person’s condition. When the parish priest administered the last rites
and pronounced the person dead, a fire was built in the Lanterne des Mort.
The unique pattern of smoke would signal to those working in the fields
outside the city walls that the person who was ill had died. To me, it
seemed somewhat like the tradition practiced in some small towns of
Georgia and other southern states, where a white wreath of flowers is
placed on the front door of the home when a member of the family has
passed away.
I chose to make a series of watercolor paintings in which I have
attempted to render fire and smoke effectively, while encouraging
viewers to reflect upon the often tragic history of Normandy, including
the Viking raids, the burning of Joan of Arc, and the D-Day landings

A Weekend of Fabulous French Fashion
In Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the House of Yves St. Laurent
October 27th and 28th

Thursday, October 27th at 7 pm
Laurent Cotta: "YSL, Classicisme et transgression"
$10 for members and $15 for non-members
Don't miss your chance to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Yves St. Laurent with Art & Fashion historian Laurent Cotta, Explore the world of French Fashion History and Contemporary Couture
About the speaker:
Since 2002, art historian and fashion historian, Laurent Cotta, has been responsible for contemporary creation at Galliera, the museum of fashion in the city of Paris.
In his time at the museum, Laurent Cotta has had the chance to mount a number of exhibitions paying homage to the great names in fashion, or launching young talent from the new generation of designers.
Laurent Cotta has been regularly lecturing at l’École du Louvre since 2004, and in 2010 was responsible for a series of courses devoted to the history of contemporary fashion. In addition, he gives lectures on Yves Saint Laurent at the Institut Français de la Mode [French Fashion Institute].
About the topic: Towards the end of his life, Yves Saint Laurent defined himself as “the last great couturier” Before the end of his career in 2002, he was certainly the last active couturier to have lived through the period of glory of Parisian design in the 1950s. Recognized by Chanel as her heir, taking after a classicism inscribed in the French tradition, he offered an understated fashion which glorified the woman, gave her the assurance that she needed to assert herself in this transitional period.
He was the first to introduce street fashion into haute couture. Although he was the champion of haute couture, he nevertheless designed a ready-to-wear line, Rive Gauche, in 1966, also signing all of his designs. Through his classics – the safari jacket, the tuxedo, see-through clothes – he accompanied women in their emancipation and fashioned a clothes-closet that is contemporary even to this day.
This event is organized in collaboration with the Délégation Générale de l'Alliance Française aux USA
Friday, October 28th, 7 pm
YSL Ciné Soirée: Yves Saint Laurent "His life and Times" and "5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris"

Few would have guessed that Yves Saint Laurent idolized beatniks, and even secretly desired to become one. But already known for his impeccable taste and proper upbringing, the fashion designer was reticent to change too much from what brought him fame-haute couture.
Two feature documentaries about the man who re-imagined women’s fashion. "His Life and Times" is an intimate biography featuring extensive interviews with the reclusive designer. "5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Pari"s is a behind the scenes look inside Saint Laurent’s legendary atelier during the creation of his final Spring line. Together they form "a timeless portrait of an artist at work - a celebration of human endeavor." (Los Angeles Times)

19th Century French Settlement founded in Alabama by Napoleonic Loyalists Exiled from France
Sunday, October 30, At 2:00 p.m Margaret Mitchell House (990 Peachtree Street, in Midtown Atlanta) will offer an overview of a fascinating chapter of French-American history. French historian, Eric Saugera, will discuss his recently published book, Reborn in America. This book recounts the true story of a French colony in Alabama founded by officers from Napoleon's army and other Napoleonic loyalists. Fleeing France after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, the exiles attempted to plant grape vines and olive trees in the wilderness of western Alabama. Their "Vine & Olive Colony" led to the forming of the City of Demopolis in the county of Marengo, named for one of Napoleon's most famous battles.
Letters from the colonists to their families who remained in France (including a trove of letters written by a former officer for Napoleon, between 1817 and 1829) provided the foundation for Saugera's exhaustive research. Saugera's story reviews the political situation in both France and America in the early 19th century. The book offers a realistic perspective on the popular myths about the cosmopolitan French immigrants struggling to make a new life in a hostile environment.
Bradley Hale and his late wife Anne, Prominent Atlantans with deep Alabama roots, sponsored Saugera’s researching (including two years in Demopolis, Alabama) and writing of this meaningful work. After the lecture, refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase and signing. Please reserve your space by responding to Kathleen Rast, krast@atlantahistorycenter.com 404-814-4021.

Around 1190 a fortress-the first version of the Louvre- was constructed. Some decades
later more courtly sections were added. In the 16th century a renaissance palace began
to be constructed, a process that continued over generations. Louis XIV at first proposed
over a century later a grand expansion; then he abandoned the project and created the
royal center at Versailles. In 1791 the Revolution proposed a Museum to occupy much
of the palace of the Louvre. The Grand Palace itself was completed only in the 1860’s
under Napoleon III. More than a century later the Museum was expanded to occupy
virtually all of the Grand Palace.
Nawal: La voix des Comoros in concert at Alliance Française d'Atlanta
Wednesday, October 5th, 7pm $15 members, $10 Students, $20 non members

Nawal originally comes from the Comoros Islands, also known as the “Perfume Islands” or “Islands of the Moon,” located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa.
Born into a family with many musicians, Nawal bathed in both popular and spiritual music from a young age, in her native islands and also in her new home in France.
Between traditional and contemporary, Nawal’s music weaves a rich dialog of cultures, a reflection of the diverse character of life in her native islands. Known as the “Voice of Comoros,” Nawal is also the first Comoran woman singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist to give performances in public.
Descending from the grand Sufi marabout of Comoros, El-Maarouf (1852-1904), Nawal invariably stays with the light of Islam founded upon love, respect and peace. In her music, she sings in favor of all humans, for education and for union.

Humanitarian Activist Marguerite Barankitse
Friday October 7th, 7 pm at Alliance Française d'Atlanta
$10 AF and Asike Members, $15 non-members
Marguerite "Maggy" Barankitse, a Burundian, was witness to an unimaginable
event that forever changed her life.
On Oct. 24, 1993, Barankitse was
working for the Catholic bishop of Ruyigi, in eastern Burundi, Africa, when
ethnic Tutsis stormed the bishop's residence, killing 72 Hutus. Amid the
chaos and confusion, Barankitse managed to save 25 children and, driven by
hope, thoughts of peace and a calling straight from God, set out to provide
a safe haven for the youngest survivors of unspeakable violence.
What began
in 1993 as a home for the 25 orphaned children who survived the attack,
Maison Shalom has grown into a multi-functional service agency helping heal
and support 30,000 young people and families centered on education, health,
vocational training and reconciliation and strives to change the lives of
children to better the lives of all Burundians.
Maggy has received many awards for her courage including the $1,000,000
Opus Award.
Located in central Africa, Burundi has a long history of ethnic strife
between the Tutsis and Hutus. Only recently did Burundi emerge from more
than 12 years of civil war, leaving 300,000 dead.

A poet, whose magnificent language restores life and humanity to the daily pain of conflict...Palestine is probably one of the most beautiful books by a committed writer who challenges his contemporaries."

It's hard to describe this film - which the 71-year-old Omar Sharif came out of retirement to star in and persuaded François Dupeyron to direct. It's a delicate thing, gossamer light, yet unforgettable. To tell its story is to break a butterfly upon a wheel. It is a a movie about tolerance, about friendship, about real commitment, full of wisdom and simplicity.

Appropriate time to finish : One hour and a half.
Serves hundreds. Pleasing to the most discriminating palate.
Sinfully delicious.
What is it about?
Culture is a two-way street. France has borrowed from the pop culture of the United States but what has the United States borrowed?
The show is a wonderful mix of musical styles that do not know borders.
More than 50 hit songs are combined in it including “My Ways,” “What Now My Love,” “Somewhere Beyond the Sea,” “Where do I begin”…
But the show is not only about songs.
It tells the story of the incredible adventure of a French teacher who decided to go and live his American dream. The evolution of his teenage point of view makes him face today’s US reality.
“Parlez-Vous Français?” is at the same time a musical review and a one man show all mixed together in a funny story about immigration and culture shock.
What do they think about it?
“Such a beautiful voice, a show with a dynamic rythym, a lot of ‘souvenirs’ from our old continent. Until the last minute, we spent a good time and had fun with FS who made us appreciate the two national anthems, and almost make us forget the kind of aggressive lyrics of the Marseillaise! Nice incentive to mix the cultures”
Laurence-Anne Ismael (President of Miami Accueil)
“This spectacular show is not a ‘déjà vu’ and it needs to be seen… Frederic Strouck is for me… Formidable!”
Bernard Casse (Owner of Croissan’Time)
“Parlez-Vous Français? is the perfect bilingual show to celebrate Franco-American friendship. Frederic Strouck’s voice will hypnotize you from Paris to New York singing French and American hits we all love.”
Philippe Timon (Director of Miami French Alliance)
Program: We Were Dancing On a Volcano by Joe Gatins
Thursday, April 8, 2010 7 p.m.
Author Joe Gatins chronicles his family's remarkable history, including his great-grandfather who built and operated Atlanta's famous Georgian Terrace Hotel and his French heiress grandmother, Egle Gatins, whose description of her own life between the wars in Paris gives the book its evocative title. A richly illustrated, compelling saga and biography, this unsentimental social history follows the adventures of more than five generations of families that made their mark on both Atlanta and Paris. The narrative especially highlights one grandmother's brave work with the French Resistance in World War II and her untiring efforts to successfully help her only son escape from Nazi prisoner of war camps.
