TCF Certificate

(Test de connaissance du français)

What is the TCF?

TCF is the French Education Ministry's test of French language ability. It is a comprehensive language placement test for non-native speakers of French who wish to obtain a quick, simple, effective and precise evaluation of their general language skills for professional or personal reasons. It follows the six-level proficiency scale of the Council of Europe.

AF Atlanta also organizes TCF-DAP and TCF-Québec exams.

Why take the TCF?

Personal — obtain an evaluation of your speaking, writing and comprehension skills in French. The TCF provides a snapshot of your proficiency in French at the time you take the test.

Work — the TCF certificate is a benchmark of your language abilities and may be used to endorse job applications or applications for internal promotion.

Study — the certification process is designed according to international standards and is recognized by French universities and Grandes Ecoles as meeting French language requirements for entry.

About the test

TCF has one compulsory test (3 sections totalling 1.5 hours) and two optional ones (2 hours total).

Compulsory tests: listening comprehension, language structures, reading comprehension.

Optional tests: oral expression or written expression.

Each candidate is promptly awarded a certificate featuring the test results valid for two years.

How to prepare for the TCF?

Although no class specifically prepares for the TCF, any course will help your comprehension and conversation skills. Please contact us if you need advice on the course(s) you may need.

You can purchase the TCF Guide Officiel training manuel from AF Atlanta for $40 + shipping/handling. Or practice online at http://tcf.didierfle.com/

and with Radio France Internationale.

More information and sample tests are available on the following website: www.ciep.fr. You can also download a concise Manuel du candidat.

Where and when to take the test?

Tests are given at the Alliance Française d’Atlanta.

Once registration is complete, no refund or credit can be made under any circumstance, unless AF cancels a session.

DELF/ DALF FAQ’s

Do I have to be a student at a French language centre to take the DELF or DALF? Anybody who wants their French skills to be recognized can take the DELF or DALF, and there are no prior conditions.

Can I take an examination more than once? Candidates can take examinations as many times as necessary, until they pass. However, they cannot take the examinations for a diploma that they already hold, unless they revoke the existing diploma in writing before the examination session. If a candidate does not pass the diploma on the second attempt, the first diploma will remain invalid.

Can the examination results be challenged? The decisions of the DELF and DALF national boards of examiners are final. To find out the conditions for viewing examination papers, candidates must contact their examination centre.

Are DELF and DALF valid everywhere? Yes. DELF and DALF receive the recognition enjoyed by all official qualifications awarded by the French Ministry of Education.

Are DELF and DALF valid for life? Yes.

Can I register online? No. Candidates must register with the examination centres.

Can I register via the CIEP? No. Only examination centres are authorized to register candidates. The CIEP is not an examination centre.

How can I get a statement of equivalent qualification? You must contact the last examination centre where you took an examination.

How can I find out what my level of French is? Candidates can take the TCF (French competency test) to find out their level of French for general purposes in each skill (reading, writing, listening, speaking). Information: www.ciep.fr/en/tcf/

Can I prepare for DELF and DALF by distance learning? You can prepare for DELF and DALF through the National Centre for Distance Learning (CNED). Information: www.cned.fr.
